These harmful chemicals were found in 90% of paper straws, approximately 80% of bamboo straws, 75% of plastic straws, and even 40% of glass straw brands. 

Testing detected "ultra-short-chain" PFAS such as trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMS). These substances are highly water-soluble, potentially causing them to leach out of straws and contaminate beverages, according to the study.

While the study's findings suggest that the concentration of PFAS in straws may be low, the long-term implications are concerning. These chemicals can accumulate in the human body over time, posing a potential risk to human health. "Small amounts of PFAS, while not harmful in themselves, can add to the chemical load already present in the body," warns Thimo Groffen, the lead researcher of the study.
